Iskandhar School

Iskandhar School is a primary school in Male' Maldives.

History

Iskandhar School had its beginning in 1961 as Hameediya Montessori School. Hameediya Montessori School prepared students for primary grades, who then went on to Aminiya and Majeediyya Schools. In 1961 the school had 185 students with a staff of 6 teachers including the Principal.

In 1970 the name of the school was changed from Hameediya to Naasiriyya Montessori school, With the completion of the extension to the original building, the school had 18 classes with about 588 students by 1978. Mrs. M. Vanculumburge was the first Principal. She continued her service till 1974. During this period, the name of the school changed to its present name Iskandhar School, corresponding to the name of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar Siri Kularanmeeba Mahaa Radhun.

In 1990 Iskandhar School became a full-fledged primary school with grades 1 to 5. At the end of 1999 Iskandhar had a student population of 1519. With the introduction of grade 6 and 7 in 2000 it increased to 2115 students. Today a population of 2280 students study in the school.

Philosophy

At Iskandhar School they believe it is essential to provide each child with the opportunity, environment and encouragement to enjoy the achievable learning experience and help him/her acquire a wide range of skills and knowledge. They aim to foster a love for our religion Islam and life long learning, instill a sense of responsibility, respect, tolerance, self discipline and independence, inculcate good values and help our students to become useful and respectful citizens in the society.

It is also the school's aim to develop a good partnership with parents, and to seek their participation in expanding the child's experience of learning.

School Houses

The four houses of the school are:

* Isdhoo House - Green
* Hura Houses - Blue
* Hilaali House - Purple
* Utheemu House - Pink

Every student of the school belongs to one of the four houses. The houses are set to enhance student-learning environment. Students are allocated to a House on admission to school. Each House is run by a committee comprising of:

* A house supervisor
* Teachers in-charge for different activities.
* A house captain, vice captain, activities captain, vice activities captain. (These posts are selected from the grade seven students).

Students for these posts are selected after completion of selection criteria. Through the house system pupils are offered the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities including sports, games and academic activities. Inter-house tournaments in popular sports are carried out throughout the year. These activities are held to enhance skills and promote talents of the students. The parents look forward to these activities, and it provides them the opportunity to interact productively with the school.

Rules

In Iskandhar School, students abide by the following rules:
*Students must abide by and adhere to the principles of Islam.
*Students should obey and respect the Principal, Supervisors, Teachers and Office staff.
*Every student must work to their best and strive for the highest.
*Students must respect and talk to their elders politely.
*Student must be courteous and be helpful at all times.
*Every student must learn to manage time, be diligent and hardworking.
*Students should be punctual to school sessions and other activities.
*Students are not allowed to wander outside of their homes after 09:30 p.m. during week days and after 10:30 p.m. on weekends.
*Students should be dressed neatly and properly to school.
*Students should take great care of their personal hygiene.
*No jewelry is allowed other than simple ear studs on girls.
*Students of grade 6 and 7 are allowed to wear a wrist watch.
*Students are not allowed to bring unnecessary materials to school other than those asked for by the teachers. Such materials brought to school will be confiscated.
*Students should take care of the school property.
*Scribbling on wall and furniture is prohibited.
*The school must be kept clean at all times.
*Students should bring all necessary items according to the Time table.
*All books should be neatly covered and labeled.
*Students should take care of their own belongings.
*No student is allowed to exit the classroom without the permission of the teacher.
*All students must refrain from using inappropriate language, bullying, fighting or any misbehaviour.
*Students must leave school or activity grounds only with the permission of the teachers.
*Students are not allowed to enter cafeterias, snack bars or shops in their school uniform unless accompanied by a parent.

Other Facilities

Computer Laboratory

Students are introduced to the use of Computers during the first Grade. All students are provided the opportunity to make use of the computer laboratory. Every student gets a 35-minute period per week. The school is currently involved in formulating the national curriculum for Computing. The Computer Laboratory is managed by a private company.

Library

The school library carries a variety of reference books, fiction books, non-fiction books, encyclopedias and magazines. The use of the library is normally available through a library period in the class timetable. Books may be borrowed by all students and has a circulation period of one week.

Science Laboratory

During the students science period and E.S periods the students use the Science Lab to do different experiments. Students are supposed to be careful while handling apparatus in the laboratory for the safety and to reduce the risks of dangerous conditions.

Audio Visual Room

Audio Visual Room provides TV, V.C.D, D.V.D plus the opportunity for teachers to take lessons using power point presentation.

Music

Students receive music instructions weekly. The students are instructed on beat, singing and appreciation of music.

Extra Curricular Activities

The school carries out Choir, Band, Quruan Club, and Singing practices. Students for Singing and Quruan Club are selected through competitions between the Houses and between classes and through special competitions organized specifically for the selection of the most talented students in these areas. The School music teachers select the students for the Band and the Choir. Basketball, netball, table tennis, athletics, football, cricket, swimming practices is carried out by different Associations in close collaboration with the school. The different associations take the responsibilities for these activities, with the school playing only a supportive and collaborative role. The parents are required to directly coordinate the students' interactions with these Associations.

Iskandhar participates in appropriate linguistic and artistic competitions carried out nationally and internationally. All the Art competitions are open for all students who wish to participate. Teachers select and train students to participate in different linguistic Competitions.

Most of the enrichment programs are conducted during the school hours. Some the enrichment programs conducted are :

* Know your tables
* Reading corner
* Activity corner
* story reading
* Creative writing
* Mental Sums
* Show and Tell
* Sing a song

Other Activities - Uniform Bodies

Cub scout and Little Maids Activities are carried out for all the boys and girls who wish to join. Students are selected from the Second grade and each year 2 to 3 packs of cubs or little maids are newly invested. Students interested in Girl Guide and Scout activities have the opportunity to join the movement. In 2005, Iskandhar School introduced Cadet Activities for grade 6 and 7 students.
