Salsa Mix

Salsa Mix

A Salsa Mix is a blending of two or more Latin Music tracks creating a seamless transition usually in a Latin Nightclub environment. It allows the Salsa dancer to extend their routine. Tracks are usually within the same BPM (Beats per minute) range and can be sped up or slowed down with modern DJ equipment. The technique was first introduced in Miami, Florida by Raymond "The Chief" Hernandez, Gil Rodriguez and Alex Gutierrez in local area nightclubs. Since Salsa music does not follow the typical percussion pattern of dance music, and has no kick drum the Salsa Mixer (DJ) must rely on other percussion instruments to align both song tempos. The construction of a Salsa track does not factor in this "mixing" technique with no percussion "break" as heard in most extended dance remixes of house music. It is therefore completely in the hands of the DJ to choose a mixing point as not to interrupt the Salsa dancer who is following a specific dancing pattern. House or Dance music allows for "freestyle" dancing with no specific footwork.
