Max Planck Research Group Optics, Information and Photonics

The Max Planck Research Group "Optics, Information and Photonics" is performing basic research on optical metrology, optical communication, new optical materials and optical applications in biology and medicine. On the 1 January 2009 it will be transformed into the "Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light".

Structure

Division 1 - "Optics and Information"

The head of this division is Prof. Gerd Leuchs. The former chair "Lehrstuhl für Optik" of Prof. Leuchs has been integrated in the research group.

The range of topics in this division includes classical optics (optical 3D metrology, interferometry, high-resolution interferometry etc.) as well as quantum information processing.

Division 2 - "Laser Physics and Photonics"

This Division is led by Prof. Dr. Lijun Wang. The main focus of the group is on the application of optics for high precision measurements of physical parameters (e.g. gravitation or time).

= Division 3 - "Photonics and New Materials"=

Led by Prof. Philip St. J. Russell this division investigates new optical materials - especially photonic crystal fibers.

Organisation

The purpose of Max Planck Research Groups at universities is to strengthen the required networking between universities and institutes of the Max Planck Society.

The Max Planck Research Group "Optics, Information and Photonics" is administrated by the Friedrich-Alexander-University, Erlangen-Nuremberg. The Institute of Optics, Information and Photonics is part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of Physics. The Institute is located in Erlangen on the site of the Siemens AG and on the campus of the university.

On the 26th of June 2008 the senate of the Max Planck Society decided to found a new "Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light" (German "Max-Planck-Institut für die Physik des Lichts"). Thus, the Max Planck Research Group will become a Max-Planck-Institute with the beginning of 2009.
