February 14 ,1949 decree the site was established, and noted the need to protect the fortifications as monuments as well as preserve their historical and architectural value. Listed on theNational Register of Historic Places onOctober 15 ,1966 .On
December 6 ,1983 the park was added to the list ofWorld Heritage Site s, a status shared with the Great Wall of China and the pyramids in Egypt. Only 12 national park areas in the United States are considered World Heritage Sites.Visiting
The site is open to visitors year-round.
