Sanjeev Chimmalgi is a Hindustani vocalist and a leading disciple of the master composer, musician and revered guru, the Padmabhushan Late [http://www.musicalnirvana.com/hindustani/cr_vyas.html Pandit C.R. Vyas] .

Biography

Sanjeev's music reflects the voice culture of Kirana gharana as well as the bandish oriented singing of the Gwalior gharana/ Agra gharana which Late Pandit C. R. Vyas belongs to.

Sanjeev had his initial training from Pandit Madhava Gudi, one of the senior-most protégés of the Kirana Maestro Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Later he came under the tutelage of the late Pandit C R Vyas, the eminent maestro, whose vocalism embodied a rare fusion of three outstanding Hindustani vocal traditions – those of Kirana, Gwalior and Agra. Sanjeev has ably imbibed the spirit of eclecticism exemplified by Pandit Vyas. It is his endeavor to find his own expression through music that makes his concerts interesting and presents a style that is his own.

Sanjeev lives in Mumbai but originally belongs to Dharwad, in Karnataka. His grandfather, Late Chimmalgi Master, was a noted tabla player and an ardent music lover from Dharwad. Coming from a music loving family, he has chosen to pursue it full time (in spite of being a qualified engineer and CAD specialist). While he continued his music training along with his academic and professional interests in the field of computers, he has now chosen to single-mindedly pursue his passion - music.

Sanjeev has performed at several conferences in Mumbai, Pune, Indore, Kolkata, Miraj, Nagpur, etc. He topped the All India Youth Competition in 1993 conducted by AIR. He was also awarded the National scholarship (1995-98) by the Government of India.

Sanjeev also has considerable interest in Carnatic music and is currently studying under vidvans Smt. T.R. Balamani and Sri Balachandran in Mumbai. He is also learning ‘Konnakol’ under mrindangam vidwan Sri T.S. Nandakumar.
