Alan Watt

Sir Alan Stewart Watt (13 April 1901 – 1988) was a distinguished Australian diplomat. He first joined the (then) Department of External Affairs in 1937. He served in the United States during World War II and then in the Soviet Union from 1947-1950. In 1950 he was appointed Secretary to the Department and was instrumental in negotiation the ANZUS and SEATO Treaties. He was appointed Ambassador to Singapore in 1954, served in Japan (1956-1959) and Germany (1960-1962).

He was a Rhodes Scholar.

He published a number of books and articles in retirement, including "Australian Diplomat - Memoirs of Sir Alan Watt," published in 1972 by Angus and Robertson.
