Beau Bridges accepted the role because he was a science fiction fan. Bridges was particularly interested in the character basically he was a blank page. Producer
Robert C. Cooper invited Bridges to flesh out the character and develop his biography. Bridges spent hours researching famous Air Force generals to find guidance for the backstory of his character. Bridges made no deliberate effort to distinguish his character from Gen. O'Neill, believing that the character of General Landry could stand on his own.
