anniversaries=The Ghana Regiment is aninfantry regiment that forms the main fighting element of the Ghanaian Army. The regiment was formed in
1879 as the Gold Coast Constabulary, from personnel of the Hausa Constabulary of Southern Nigeria, to perform internal security and police duties in the British colony of the Gold Coast. In this guise, the regiment earned its first battle honour as part of theAshanti campaign. The Gold Coast Constabulary was renamed in 1901 as the Gold Coast Regiment, following the foundation of the West African Frontier Force, under the direction of the
Colonial Office of theBritish Government . The regiment raised a total of fivebattalions for service during theFirst World War , all of which served during the East Africa campaign. During theSecond World War , the regiment raised nine battalions, and saw action in Kenya's Northern Frontier District, Italian Somaliland, Abyssinia andBurma as part of the2nd (West Africa) Infantry Brigade .In
1957 , the Gold Coast became the first black African nation to declare independence from Britain. As a result, in1959 , all of the Gold Coast Military Forces, including the Gold Coast Regiment, were withdrawn from the Royal West African Frontier Force. With the country's change of name toGhana , the regiment was renamed as the Ghana Regiment.Today, the regiment forms the bulk of the Ghanaian Army, with a total of six battalions, divided equally between the army's two
brigade s. As the army's main force, it is responsible for Ghana's internal security and protection from external aggressors. However, Ghana also makes a large commitment topeacekeeping operations in the region and overseas, most notabily inSierra Leone andLiberia , for which the Ghana Regiment provides the majority of personnel. The Ghanaian soldiers seconded to these peacekeeping operations maintain a tough, impartial reputation, and are respected, if not feared, by the opposing forces who they impose themselves between, either under the aegis of the United Nations or the Organization of African States.Battle Honours
