Ælfhelm, Ealdorman of York

Ælfhelm, Ealdorman of York

Aelfhelm is listed in Prosopography of Anglo-Saxon England as Ealdorman of Southern Northumbria and brother of Wulfric Spot.

According to John of Worcester, Ælfhelm was invited to a feast with Eadric Streona in 1006. Afterwards during a hunting trip he was ambushed and killed by Godwine Porthund, the public hangman of Shrewsbury, who had been paid by Eadric Streona, although this has been questioned more recently as Streona was "a man to whom to mysterious crimes could safely be attributed" (Sir Frank Stenton).

His sons Ulfegeat and Wulfegeat were subsequently blinded at Cookham by Ethelred the Unready. His daughter Aelgifu of Northampton became handfast wife of Canute the Great and mother of Harold Harefoot.
