- Ulrich S. Schubert
Ulrich S. Schubert was born in
Tübingen in 1969. He studied chemistry at the Universities ofFrankfurt and Bayreuth (both Germany) and the Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond (USA). His Ph.D. work was performed under the supervision of Professor Eisenbach (Bayreuth, Germany) and Professor NewkomeFlorida , USA. In 1995 he obtained his doctorate with Prof. Eisenbach. After a postdoctoral training with Professor Lehn (Nobel Laureate in 1987) at the Université Strasbourg (France ) he moved to the Technische Universität München (Germany) to obtain his habilitation in 1999. From 1999 to spring 2000 he held a temporal position as a professor at the Center for NanoScience at the Technische Universität München (Germany). He became a Full-Professor in summer 2000 at theEindhoven University of Technology . Since summer 2007 Prof Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert teaches at the [http://www.uni-jena.de/ Friedrich-Schiller-University]Jena and holds the chair for Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry. (Until 2010 he will be a part-time university professor in Eindhoven as well as scientific chairman in the fields of HTE at the [http://www.polymers.nl/ Dutch Polymer Institute] . In addition he acts as the Director of the “Institute of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry” and directs the research cluster “Innovative Materials and Technologies” at the University of Jena. His Awards include the Bayerischen Habilitations-Förderpreis, the Habilitandenpreis of the GDCh (Fachgruppe Makromolekulare Chemie), the Heisenberg-Stipendium of the DFG, the Dozenten-Stipendium of the Fonds der Chemische Industrie and the VICI award of NWO. Among 640.000 chemists worldwide, Prof Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert is ranked at place 526.
Prof Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert also gained musical education as clarinetist in
Frankfurt (Germany), Richmond andTampa (both USA). Chamber orchestra courses lead him to the Abegg-Trio, Hagen-Quartett, Amadeua-Quartett, Prof. Jan Doormann and Prof. Francois Benda. He played in various cities in Europe and the USA.In 1993 he founded the concert series “Forum Junger Musiker” in
Bayreuth . Since then the Forum Junger Musiker presents chamber concerts at theMargravial Opera House inBayreuth . In 1994 Prof. Ulrich S. Schubert founded theInternationale Junge Orchesterakademie (IJOA) together with Dr. Andreas Göldel, Prof. August Everding andSir Charles Mackerras . In 1995 he brought theBayreuther Osterfestival into life. He is now president of theKultur- und Sozialstiftung Internationale Junge Orchesterakademie (IJOA) (Cultural and Social Foundation International Youth Orchestra Academy) and artistic director of theBayreuther Osterfestival .14th Bayreuther Osterfestival will be held between the dates 21-30 March 2008, with the participation of young musicians from 30 countries, trained by well-known coaches and professors. The festival, bringing musicians from all over the world with a special focus on conflict areas such as
Israel -Palestine orNorth Korea - andSouth Korea , allows young people to find access to each other on peaceful basis. The gains of the concerts will be donated to the children with cancer, which is the original asset of the foundation. The Academy has so far raised over € 500.000 for charity. Hospitals and institutions helping children with cancer in the regions where the concerts take place get donation from the sales of concert tickets and CDs.Research
The major focus his research interest relates to metallo-supramolecular (block) copolymers and the investigation of the self-assembly process, characterization of supramolecular assemblies in solution, combinatorial material research, heterocyclic chemistry, supramolecular materials, surface chemistry, nanoscience and tailor-made macromolecules, which can be used in bioscience or medical applications. More information on research topic is available on [http://www.schubert-group.com/ www.schubert-group.com] .
Publication / Patent
Up to March 2008 there are 300 publications and twelve patents by Prof. Schubert.
