Robert Adkins was born on Fort Rucker, Alabama, the second child of a military father. His father served multiple tours of duty in Vietnam, and left the family after returning to the United States. Adkins was raised by his mother and stepfather in Enterprise, Alabama. Adkins studied at Enterprise State Junior College(now Enterprise Ozark Community College), but attained no degree. After marrying, he relocated to Montgomery and continued working and writing in the area until relocating to Biloxi, Mississippi following a divorce from his first wife. He has also resided in Fayetteville, North Carolina along with his current wife. They now reside in Crestview, Fl.
Adkins first received critical acclaim for the patriotic poem Together We Stand. In this poem, he spoke to the hearts of a saddened nation after the tragedies of September 11, 2001. Adkins turned down several offers to publish this piece for profit, but chose to allow the poem to be used to raise money for the Red Cross relief fund. This poem also marks the first poem to be published without use of Adkins' pseudonym Will Robbins.
The poetic work
Ms. Rosa was a tribute to civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks and again was used for charity. This piece was used to celebrate black history month in churches from Montgomery, Alabama to Chicago, Illinois. It also shows the diversity in his style that allows him to write about topics that fall outside his everyday comfort zone.
