Gaelic medium education

Gaelic medium education

Gaelic medium education (GME) is a form of education in Scotland that sees pupils taught primarily via the medium of Scottish Gaelic with English being taught as the secondary language. Similar forms of education exist in the two other Gaelic-speaking countries, Ireland (see Gaelscoil) and Mann (see Bunscoill Ghaelgagh).

GME is increasingly popular throughout Scotland. The number of pupils who are in Gaelic medium education at primary school level has risen from 24 in 2 schools in 1985, to over 2,000 in 62 schools in 2006-2007. In January 2008, Highland councillors were presented with a report that demand for Gaelic medium education was such that four new schools, in addition to the one in Inverness, were required. Gaelic medium Unit

In primary education in Scotland, a Gaelic medium unit (GMU) is a stream within the school in which the Gaelic language is used as a medium of instruction.

As there are still relatively few Gaelic medium schools, Gaelic minorities are frequently served by special units within English-speaking schools. It is not only Gaelic-speaking families who choose to send their children to these units, but also mono-lingual (ie. English-speaking) parents who would like their children to grow up bilingually.

Within some all-Gaelic schools, there are EMUs (English Medium Units) where the number of Gaelic speakers greatly out number English speakers - One of these schools being Bunsgoil Shleite (Sleat Primary) on the Isle of Skye.
