We Have a Strong Desire

We Have a Strong Desire is one of the more popular songs by Shlock Rock. A parody of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire", it summarizes the history of the world from a Jewish perspective, beginning with Creation and ending with a call for the coming of the Messiah. As the lyrics were written in the early '90's, a considerable amount of modern events are not included in the song.

As with Joel's lyrics, the lyrics of "We Have a Strong Desire" are essentially a chronological list of specific events, names, and places.

* Adam and Eve were the first humans who, according to a literal explanation of what is found in the first chapters of Genesis, lived in the Garden of Eden until they were expelled for committing the sin of eating from the Tree of Knowledge.
* Cain and Abel were brothers and the first two children of Adam and Eve. Cain eventually killed Abel out of jealousy when God accepted the latter's offering but not the former's.
* Noah's Ark was the ship built by Noah as a command by God who foretold of a great flood.
* Flood of Rain references the great flood that God brought upon the world for their sins against humanity.
*Terach was Abraham's father.
*Idols - According to Rashi, Terach was the proprietor of an idol boutique.
*Haran was Terach's third son. Abraham and Nachor, Terach's first two sons, each married one of Haran's daughters after his death.
*Abraham was commanded by God to leave his home and his birthplace of Ur Kasdim and travel to Canaan.
*Sarah was the wife of Abraham.
*Issac was the first-born son of Sarah, while he was Abraham's second son. Abraham had had Ishmael 13 years earlier with Sarah's handmaid, Hagar.
*Brit milah is the rite of circumcision. At the age of 99, Abraham was the first to be commanded to circumcize himself. Ishmael was 13 years old, and subsequently, males were commanded to be circumcized on their eighth day of life.
