Buckman Arts Magnet Elementary School

Buckman Arts Magnet Elementary School

Buckman Elementary School is an Arts Focus Option school in the Portland Public Schools, located in Portland, Oregon. The school provides kindergarten through fifth grade classes for children in the inner Southeast community of the city, and for children who want an arts integrated education, and who transfer to Buckman from their local school. Approximately three-fifths of the students transfer to Buckman from other schools.

Buckman Elementary School teaches arts content, and integrates art into the teaching of other subjects, in a method based on Howard Gardner's multiple-intelligences philosophy. All students participate in the arts program, rather than it being a 'school within a school.' Students participate in music, drama, dance and visual art.

Enrollment for Buckman as of October 2006 was 506. In 2005-2006 Buckman's third grade achieved a 97.8% score for reading, and a 95.6% score for math; the fifth grade achieved a 97.6% for reading, and a 92.9% for math. The school spends $4297 per student and maintains 26.12 staff members.

The school's site includes a community garden and a sports field. The school is located at 320 SE 16th Avenue, in the Buckman, Portland, Oregon Neighborhood, and is named after Cyrus Buckman (born 1834, died 1894) a member of the [http://www.portlandonline.com/ Portland City Council] .
