Abraham Wheelocke [Wheelock, Whelocke, Whelock, Wheloc.] (
Whitchurch, Shropshire , 1593 - 1653) was an English linguist. He was the firstAdams Professor of Arabic at theUniversity of Cambridge , from around 1632. According to Robert Irwin ["For Lust of Knowing" (2006), p. 98.] "he regarded it as part of his academic duty to discourage students from taking up the subject".Thomas Hyde was a pupil.He was also Reader in Anglo-Saxon. He produced the "
editio princeps " of the "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle " (1643-4) [ [http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Anglo-Saxon_Chronicle Anglo-Saxon Chronicle - LoveToKnow 1911 ] ] . In the same work he published an important edition ofBede 's "Ecclesiastical History " in its original Latin text [David C. Douglas, "English Scholars" (1939), p. 73.] , as well asKing Alfred 's translation, and works of law.He graduated MA from
Trinity College, Cambridge in 1618, and became Fellow ofClare College, Cambridge in 1619.
