History
There is evidence of a
Neolithic settlement at Elburg consisint of stone tools and pottery shards. From Roman times there are names and shards of earthenware which suggest that there was an army camp at the site of Elburg.
The earliest extant written record of Elburg is from 796
A.D. There are several records from the
13th century . Elburg was granted town status by earl Jan of Yellow early in the century. In 1313 there is a record of the fishing rights granted to (or confirmed) the city. In 1367 the city is recorded as a member of theHanseatic League .Between 1292 and 1296 E;birg was rebuilt in the form it is seen today, with a moat, wall, and straight streets. This rapid rebuilding was expensive, indicating that Elburg was affluent or worth some expense.
The town remained a fishing and farming center through the end of
World War II . Unlike other Dutch cities, Elburg refused to use city funds to build a railroad station in 1863. The land owners also asked unreasonably high prices for the right of way. Thus the Utrecht-Amersfoort-Zwolle , the track line bypassed Elburg, which prevented any manufacturing. Elburg became a city of poverty. In 1932, the
Zuiderzee was created by means of a dam. The former salt water bay gradually became a freash water lake destroying the Elburg fishery. In 1956, Elburg were concluded that only by tourism would the town survive. By its favourable position both on the edge of the canal and near the Veluwemeer, tourists have made it a destination. Each year many visit to see the largely unchanged
