C. Leon King High School

C. Leon King High School opened in 1960 with 58 faculty members and 960 students. The school was named in honor of C. Leon King, a distinguished and respected member of the Hillsborough County Board of Public Instruction for 18 years. It is located at 6815 North 56th Street, Tampa, FL 33610.King High School is a traditional/hybrid magnet. It has one of the three International Baccalaureate programs in Hillsborough County, Florida. The IB program of King began in July, 1993. Eighty-nine percent of IB seniors earned the IB Diploma in 2006--one of the highest rates in the United States.Fact|date=October 2007

King High School Marching Lions

*Band Director- Cheri Sleeper Mrs. Sleeper currently in her tenth year as Director of Bands at King High School, has been a music educator for 18 years. She received her Bachelor of Music Education from Florida State University and a Master of Arts in Music Education from The University of South Florida. In 1998 she served as the Hillsborough County Middle School Honor Band Clinician and is frequently sought after as a clinician throughout the county. She is a member of the Florida Bandmasters Association where she has served as both District Chairman and Secretary. Other professional affiliations include membership in the Music Educator National Conference, Hillsborough County Secondary Music Council, and Tau Beta Sigma Music Sorority. Mrs. Sleeper has served on various committees during her tenure in Hillsborough County helping to shape the path to success for many young musicians. She assisted in writing the curriculum currently used in Hillsborough County music classrooms and also helped to author the Criteria for the Master Musician Program and the Honors Band Curriculum. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Sleeper is also a frequent performer at First Presbyterian Church of Brandon on Flute and Bass and also performs with the Mostly Pops Orchestra.

*MembershipThe King High Marching Lions aremade up of both instrumentalists andauxiliary members. As King HighSchool is on traditional 7-periodscheduling, all instrumentalists areexpected to participate the entire schoolyear in both marching and concertgroups. Instrumentalists may alsoparticipate in jazz band, during the 2ndsemester either in a class period orvoluntary class after school dependentupon placement. Membership in theMarching Lions and band program is anopportunity and privilege. Anystudents who abuse that privilege aresubject to removal from the bandprogram.

*Lionettes-The Lionettes are a group of talented dancers who support the band. The squad performs with the band on the field during halftime shows and the FBA performance with colorful prop performances, dance routines, and flag/rifle features; they are a welcomed asset. The ladies maintain a rigorous practice schedule throughout the week, working on half-time performance material as well as pep rally and independent competition enterprises, and their work is greatly appreciated.
