The thesis derives it's name from the formal logic notation that denotes it: Kp→KKp. Literally: "Knowing p implies the knowing of knowing p."

As explained by Carruthers in "Human Knowledge and Human Nature", "'The KK thesis' ... holds that in order to know something, you must at the same time know that you know it." [cite book
