Education

In 1975 he graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School and was admitted to the bar in Wisconsin (and to the New York bar in 1979). He is a "distinguished graduate" of the National War College (1996).

From 1999 to 2002, Lange served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Botswana. From 2002 to 2003, Lange served as Associate Dean in the Leadership and Management School at the Foreign Service Institute. From 2003 to 2004, as Deputy Coordinator in the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, which oversees all U.S. Government international HIV/AIDS assistance. From 2004 to 2006, Lange served as Deputy Inspector General of the State Department overseeing audits, inspections and investigations.

Lange is currently the United States ambassador who "leads the U.S. Government’s engagement with foreign governments and international organizations to help prepare for and respond to outbreaks of avian influenza and the threat of a pandemic." He was appointed the "Special Representative" for "Avian and Pandemic Influenza" on May 3, 2006. "He heads the Avian Influenza Action Group, which executes the State Department’s mission to manage international activities under the U.S. National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza."
