- Jörgen Nilsen Schaumann
Jörgen Nilsen Schaumann (1879-1953) was a Swedish
dermatologist . He studied medicine at theUniversity of Lund and inStockholm , where he received his medical license in 1907. Subsequently he worked at St. Göran's Hospital in Stockholm, and in 1912 began practicing medicine at the Finsen Institute inCopenhagen , where he remained for the rest of his career.Schaumann's name is associated with the
Besnier-Boeck-Schaumann disease . In 1917 he published an article on the disease, through which thesystemic nature of the condition became realized throughout the medical community. His name is also lent toSchaumann bodies , which arecalcium -containinginclusion bodies found in thecytoplasm ofgiant cells insarcoidosis andberylliosis . Late in his career he performed research concerning new aspects of benign lymphogranulomatosis.Schaumann was also an accomplished artist, whose paintings and sculptures adorned several locations in Stockholm. In 1946 he became an honorary doctor at the
University of Paris , and during the following year he became a corresponding member of l'Académie nationale de Médecine.References
