Arna Mer-Khamis

Arna Mer (Arna Mer-Khamis) (1931-1994) was an Israeli political and human rights activist. She was born in 1931, in Rosh Pinna. During the First Intifada, as part of a project to support the education of children in the occupied West Bank, she established the organisation In the Defence of Children under Occupation/Care and Learning, and later established the Freedom Theatre in Jenin refugee camp. She was married to Saliba Khamis, a prominent member of the Communist party in Israel. In 1993, she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award. Her son Juliano Mer directed the film Arna's Children about her work with the Freedom Theatre.
