Plum Beach is a
beach and surrounding neighborhood along the north shore ofRockaway Inlet , in theNew York City borough ofBrooklyn . It is located near the neighborhoods ofSheepshead Bay andGerritsen Beach just off theBelt Parkway . It is named for the beach plums that grow wild there. Since 1972 it has been a part ofGateway National Recreation Area , though the parking lot andgreenway that provide primary access to the shore are the responsibility of theNew York City Department of Parks and Recreation and theNew York City Department of Transportation .
