Somak Raychaudhury

Dr Somak Raychaudhury (born 1962 in Kolkata, India) is an astrophysicist. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, England. Besides teaching various Astronomy & Cosmology courses at the undergraduate level and supervising postgraduate research students, Dr.Raychaudhury has also been very actively involved in several public outreach activities throughout his academic career in India (1996-2000) and England (2000 onwards).

He is interested in studying the Large-scale structure of the Universe and its influence on galaxy formation and evolution. He has been involved in various inter-continental projects observing galaxies, groups, clusters and superclusters at optical, X-ray and radio wavelengths. In doing so he has employed the spectroscopic and photometric observables to enrich our knowledge of the Cosmic Web. He has also modelled galaxies and clusters as gravitational lenses using X-ray and optical data. Amongst others, Dr.Raychaudhury's current interests lies in developing statistical tools for astronomical data analysis.

One of his major contribution to modern Astronomy is the re-discovery of the Shapley supercluster in 1989.
