NeuroAid

NeuroAid

[http://www.neuroaid.com NeuroAid] is a preparation containing a mixture of 14 herbal and natural extracts. It was developed by the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin in China (TianJin Medical University).

NeuroAid is the brand name for Danqi Jiaonang, a Traditional Chinese Medicine drug approved and marketed in China for "functional and neurological deficits from cerebral infarction" (i.e. helping a stroke patient during the recovery from their disabilities). NeuroAid was registered as a Chinese proprietary medicine in Singapore in July 2006, based on the results of double-blind placebo controlled randomized studies performed in China from 1999 to 2001 on 605 ischemic stroke patients at restoration stage (2 weeks to 6 months after their stroke onset). In China, approximately 200,000 people are taking NeuroAid every year. Although several clinical trials were conducted, their results are pending publication. [Note: additional information will be added once publication is available]

In October 2007, a new study including 1,100 patients was begun. It is a multi-center double-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of NeuroAid in reducing neurological deficit and improving independence in patients in rehabilitation, with treatment starting within 48 hours of a stroke. The study will be conducted at several hospitals in Singapore, followed by The University of Santo Tomas Hospital in the Philippines and a number of leading hospitals in Thailand.

The study will be conducted by [http://www.chimes-society.org CHIMES Society] , an international partnership of Key Opinion Leaders in stroke. Thie trial is currently enrolling and details can be found at the National Institutes of Health www.ClinicalTrial.gov trial registry under identifier NCT00554723.

NeuroAid's main components are Radix Astragali, Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae, Radix Paeoniae rubra, Rhizoma chuanxiong, Radix notoginseng, Cortex moutan, Lignum Dalbergiae odoriferae, Radix polygalae, and Rhizoma Acori tatarinowii.
