Alberta Crude

Alberta Crude

"Alberta Crude" was the nickname for the defensive team of the Canadian Football League Edmonton Eskimos during their Grey Cup "dynasty" period from 1978 to 1982.

Edmonton's five-time Grey Cup champion team was one of the best, if not the very best, team the CFL has ever seen. While it had a potent offense, led by Hall of Famer Warren Moon, its defense was so good it earned its own name.

Named after the oil that has accounted for much of the prosperity the Alberta economy has enjoyed in recent decades, the defense was anchored by its imposing defensive line. This was comprised of Dave Fennell, Ron Estay, David Boone, and York Hentschel. Led by Fennell, himself nicknamed "Doctor Death," these four both halted opposition running backs and led the league in quarterback sacks.

The remainder of Edmonton's defense was also all-star quality. Led by award winning Danny Kepley, it also included Dale Potter, Tom Towns, Larry Highbaugh and Joe Hollimon.
