nihongo|Ojamajo Doremi|おジャ魔女どれみ|Ojamajo Doremi is a magical girl anime series. It originally ran for four seasons from 1999-2002 totaling 201 episodes, with companion movies to the second and third seasons. A thirteen episode OVA was released in 2004. A manga adaptation was published by Kodansha written by Izumi Todo and illustrated by Shizue Takanashi.

tory

The series anime focuses on two main problems the main character, Doremi, is trying to solve. The first is the heroines' efforts to become skilled in the art of magic, and secondly the friendships and relationships between them in the human world. In "Majo-kai", the world of witches, they focus on fighting enemies, the Queen's fearful predecessor, or hostile wizards. In the human world however, they use their magical talents to help those in need. Being trainees in magic, their powers often do not immediately provide a solution to their problems. In the end, the primary moral of these stories is not about power, but about kindness and compassion.

Theme

The series contains five themes. The first season's theme is carnival. In "Magical Stage", the lights around the girls resemble a swing carnival ride. The second season is flowers, the magical stage shows a rose blossoming. The third season is pastry, the magical stage resembles a cake. The fourth is crafts. The last season is secrets around the Ojamajos and the people they know.

Characters

Doremi Harukaze

(春風どれみ Harukaze Doremi, Dorie Goodwyn in the 4Kids edit) :Seiyū: Chiemi Chiba :Age: 8 (1st Story arc) :First Appearance: Ep. one, 1st Story arc :Fairy's Name: Dodo :Favorite Color: Pink :Instruments: Piano :DOB: 30 June 1990 :Blood Type: B :Became Witch: Ep. one, 1st Story arc :Musical Note: Do (Beginning of scale) :Hobbies: Eating Steak :Zodiac Sign: Cancer Doremi Harukaze is the protagonist. She is the first daughter of Keisuke (a fishing writer) and Haruka (originally a pianist, now a homemaker) and the older sister of Poppu. She wears her hair in two large round buns, similar to odango atama. Doremi reflects the personality of a regular maho shojo: lively to the point of being noisy, clumsy and careless but very compassionate, and has shown to be boy-crazy in earlier anime. Her favorite food is steak (but throughout the series, she always fails to eat any.). Her best-known quote translates into "I'm the unluckiest pretty girl in the whole world." She lives in Misora City and attends Misora First Elementary School during the series.

Hazuki Fujiwara

(藤原はづき Fujiwara Hazuki, Reanne Griffith in the 4Kids edit) :Seiyū: Tomoko Akiya :Age: 8 (1st Story arc) :First Appearance: Ep. one, 1st Story arc :Fairy's Name: Rere :Favorite Color: Orange :Instrument: Violin :DOB: 14 February 1991 :Blood Type: A :Became Witch: Ep. four, 1st Story arc Musical :Note: Re :Hobbies: Reading :Zodiac Sign: Aquarius

Hazuki Fujiwara is a shy, passive, and sweet girl, and a childhood friend of Doremi ever since kindergarten. She attends the same class as Doremi at Misora First Elementary School along with the other main characters. Although it's believed that Hazuki's parents are wealthy due to the fact that her father is a film director, one chapter explains that Hazuki's grandparents were already millionaires before Hazuki's mother(Reiko Fujiwara) married Akira-san. Hazuki cares about her family very much, especially her mother, and always liked the dresses her mom buys and did everything her mom told her to do. Hazuki is very afraid of ghosts; she tries to cope with this fear by thinking of Majo Rika, as well as chanting her name repeatedly. However, it doesn't seem to help much. Hazuki is also the only character in the series who thinks that the SOS Trio are funny; on many occasions, she is either seen giggling at their lame puns or making comments to suggest that they are funny and has even laughed for the most lame and unfunny comedians.

Aiko Senoo

(妹尾あいこ Senō Aiko, Mirabelle Haywood in the 4Kids edit) :Seiyū: Yuki Matsuoka :Age: 8 (1st Story arc) :First Appearance: Ep. three, 1st Story arc :Fairy's Name: Mimi :Favorite Color: Blue :Instrument: Harmonica :DOB: 14 November 1990 :Blood Type: O :Became Witch: Ep. four, 1st Story arc :Musical Note: Mi :Hobby: Sports :Zodiac Sign: Scorpio Aiko Senoo is an outgoing tomboy who wears overalls (evolved into a vest in the 3rd series) and has split curled hair. She is a transfer student from Osaka to Misora First Elementary School, and talks in Kansai-ben, a Japanese dialect originating in Osaka (like Kero in the Cardcaptor Sakura series). Her parents are divorced and she lives with her father, a taxi driver, while her mother, a nurse, works in Osaka. She loves both her parents very much and wishes for them to get back together. She tries to bring them back together with forbidden magic once in the fourth season before being stopped by Doremi. Also, she's very good at athletics and is the most athletic of the Ojamajo.

Endings

There are four stories' endings to Ojamajo Doremi series.

Ojamajo Doremi: When the witches are discovered by their families and friends at the MAHO-Dou, Onpu uses the forbidden magic to erase everyone's memories. Although she claims that she is still protected from the magic charm, it disintegrates and Onpu's punishment is a 100-year sleep. Doremi, Hazuki, and Aiko are desperate to wake her, and Jou-sama claims that they can do Magical Stage, but regardless of whether Onpu wakes up or not, they must give up their powers. They agree to do so, and with Poppu's help, Onpu awakens. But now all five witches must give up their powers, in Onpu's case because she used too much forbidden magic.

Ojamajo Doremi Sharp : The Former Queen places a curse on Hana that makes her terribly sick. Nothing can help her, and so the witches learn that they must find a flower that will help Hana. The catch is that the Former Queen is blocking the way to the flower, so they must defeat her to get through. One by one, Aiko, Onpu, and Hazuki use their crystals at full power, but are beaten and fall into a 1,000-year sleep. Doremi also attempts, and she finally breaks through and get the flower, but she falls asleep too. When Hana-chan sees that they're all asleep, she cries out "MOMMY!", and the four girls are all awaken. However, they must all give up their powers, AGAIN, and they can't take care of Hana-chan anymore.

Motto! Ojamajo Doremi: With the help of the new Ojamajo Momoko they wake up the Ancient Queen. The Ancient Queen is angry and sad with humans after having lost all her sons and daughters and her husband, but Doremi convinces her that inside her heart she still has beautiful memories of them. Ancient Queen Majo Tourbillon remembers the happy times she spent with her family and the Cursed Wood retreats.

Ojamajo Doremi DOKKAN: When it's time for the girls to finally become witches, they are faced with a hard choice. If they accept, then their lifespand will expand greatly and therefore they cannot live in the same time scale with their family, friends, etc. anymore. After a month thinking, Doremi answers for everyone that they all choose not to become witches, which of course means that they cannot see Hana-chan anymore and they must give up their powers one and final time.
