State Route 116 is a highway that forms the primary route of access to Indian Island and Marrowstone Island. The road begins at the Junction with State Route 19 just south of the community of Irondale on the Quimper Peninsula. The current alignment passes through the community of Port Hadlock in a roughly easterly direction and turns north upon reaching Marrowstone Island, where it passes through Nordland on its way to Fort Flagler State Park. The highway ends at mile 9.83 at the main gate of Fort Flagler State Park.

State Route 116 passes by several other recreational facilities, including: Mystery Bay State Park, Oak Bay County Park, Swan Landing Island County Park, and East Beach County Park, and several boat launches.

State Route 116 also passes along the south end of the Indian Island Naval Reserve.

While State Route 116 is ostensibly an auxiliary route of US Route 101, at no point in its route does it connect with US Route 101.
