Jacob de Witt (
Dordrecht 7 February 1589 – Dordrecht10 January 1674 ) was aburgomaster ofDordrecht and theson of a timbermerchant . He was also the father of Johan andCornelis de Witt .Career
He studied
law atLeiden University and obtained alaw degree there. In 1618, he becametreasurer of the Synod of Dordt where he held several positions in public service, for instance serving as burgomaster six times. He also served as emissary toSweden along withAndries Bicker .He was a member of the
States of Holland and as such opposed toWilliam II, Prince of Orange , who was thestadtholder ofHolland ,Zeeland , Utrecht,Guelders andOverijssel . De Witt supported thePeace of Münster and, in May 1650 filed a proposal to reduce the size of thearmy which causedpolitical friction.The affair led to a
coup of the stadtholder who, in secret, staged an attack onAmsterdam . On30 June 1650, De Witt and five other prominent members of the States were arrested at theBinnenhof inThe Hague . The burgomasters ofDelft ,Hoorn ,Medemblik ,Haarlem , andDordrecht were kept prisoner in Castle Loevestein. On17 August they were released after having reversed the reduction of the army size.Death
In 1657 he moved to
The Hague , but after the murder of his sons on20 August 1672 , on which he was brought to safety, he avoidedThe Hague , spent a short time in Dordrecht where he died in on10 January 1674 .References
