Libbis

Libbis or Libis is a surname originating from Strasbourg, in the Alsace-Lorraine region in France The Jewish name "Libis" originates from Bavaria and Austria, although some Libbis's are Jewish and someLibis's are not. Records (including current directory and recent census) also show families in Leipzig, Nurnberg, Stuttgart, Aachen, and Freiburg in Germany.

Origin

Most Libbis's outside of continental Europe are believed to be descended from Armin and Maria Libbis (nee Fokke) who emigrated to England in the late 17th century with many other French Protestants (Huguenots) who were being oppressed by the majority Catholics(others escaped to Germany, Belgium, Sweden, and Denmark). Their descendants now reside in Liverpool, Poole, and Cornwall in England, and in Ohio, Wisconsin,and Vermont in the United States. There are also many in South Eastern Australia, primarily in Victoria, but it is unknown if they are descended from Armin. Libbis family records also date back to Norfolk and Suffolk from the 17th century and there are records of the family throughout East Anglia over the centuries.
