Bruce Amos earned a
bachelor's degree inCivil Engineering fromQueen's University in 1968, and represented Queen's in team chess events. Amos completed hisdoctoral studies inmathematics atYale University .He was awarded the
International Master title in 1969 for his high finish at theCanadian Chess Championship Zonal atPointe Claire ;Duncan Suttles andZvonko Vranesic tied for the top spots. Reykjavik 1970, Amos narrowly missed a Grandmaster result when he placed 3rd with 11/15, ahead of several Grandmasters, withGudmundur Sigurjonsson winning. He played in the 1973 Canadian Open and U.S. Open. After the 1976 Olympiad, Amos largely gave up competitive chess in favour of go, the Oriental board game, and became a top-ranking world player.
