Azanja

Azanja is a country-side in Serbia, officially belongs to Smederevska Palanka. Azanja is 160 meters above mean sea level surrounding the coasts of Jezava and Jasenica rivers. It is constructed like Shumadian type of country-side, with a little center in it. In the center is located temple of Saint Cozma and Damian.It is located 44° 25' 59" N - 20° 52' 47" E Count: Podunavski (Dunav = Danube)

Name and the history of the village

Name Azanja probably dates from ages of Turkish Empire, from the Arabian word "hazain"/"hazna" with meaning of baskets or wheat-holders (Serbian: kosevi, zitnice). From 1850 to 1950 Azanja is in Serba known as the biggest village. In 1950, when Azanja reached population of 12,500 it was split on three parts. Vlaski Do, Grcac and Azanja. Because of the big population numbering Azanja was pronounced as a mid-range country-side (Serbian: varosica ) in 1922.

Culture and education

Its culture happenings are mostly during the religious holidays. Country fair on Trnova Petka (8 August) has been held every year since the construction of the church in 1885 year and still goes on. Since 1997 during the fair some ethno-culture manifestation "The days of Azanja's bakings", in 2006 the night of poetry and picture exposions were added to the fare. There was also a "Gipsy's night" in Azanja in 2007. There is one elementary school in Azanja, it is called "Radomir Lazic", Amateur Theatre Azanja and KUD Azanja (KUD - culture-artistics society aka CAS). At the end of 2005 a library has been opened in Azanja. Azanja has one football team, Shumadia.

Demography

According to the data from 2002 Azanja had a population of 4717 people. In the last three years he fall of the population has been met. There is 3809 (18+) people, and the average lifetime in Azanja is 42,7 years (men - 41.0 years and 44.4 of woman lifetime). From the historic sight of view in 1784 Azanja had 14 Christian households, in 1942 there was 1308 Christian households and in 2002 there was 1408 of them. One family averages 3.35 persons (data from 2002). Organization World Gazetteer calculated the population of Azanja, which is 4,531 people.

Roms

According to the data from 2002 there are 47 Roms, while some data say that there are around 1500 person of Roms type in Azanja during the 2002.
