The Taltheilei were
Boreal Forest people who moved into the lands previously inhabited byArctic groups when the climate changed around 750 B.C. [cite web |url=http://www.heritage-online.net/Timeline/taltheil.htm |title=Taltheilei Tradition |accessdate=2007-10-12 |work=heritage-online] Their territory included the centralMackenzie District and the interior area of theDistrict of Keewatin during the period of 700 B.C. until early trading posts were established. Sites attributable to the Taltheilei Shale Tradition have been found in several place. Their Little Duck Lake site later became the site of aHudson Bay trading post called "Caribou Post" due to its proximity to the migration path of the caribou; these Taltheilei are ancestors of theSayisi Dene , now aChipewyan band. Other Taltheilei lived at Shethanei Lake (traveled later bySamuel Hearne in the early days of theHudson's Bay Company ), Caribou Lake (on theManigatogan River system) andEgenolf Lake , all in northernManitoba .
