- Stephen J. Prescott II
Personal Info
Stephen Prescott was born and raised in Portland, Maine. He was a wonder child, known for his amazing ability to always land on his feet in a cat like manner regardless of how he was dropped. This ability saved his life 4 and a half times. As he grew he discovered that he was a natural bass player with a singing voice very similar to
Frank Sinatra . This led to him being featured in a band called Stone Table. Although they did not often perform, when they did it was to rave reviews. The crowds went wild for the was Prescott could jump from anything and land on his feet. After too many people confused them with the newly popularStone Temple Pilots , Stone Table broke up in 1994. This left Prescott to find a better fit for his ability. He found his dream gig in 1995 as a temporary bass player forPetra (band) . Although short lived these were the finest days of Prescott's life. He stepped down from the band due to creative differences caused by Prescott's genius. He currently is pursuing a solo career and working as a physics teacher. At a modest 6'13" Prescott was a formidable presence in the
pogs tournament of champions federation. With his jump serve Prescott could flip nearly 200 pogs in one stack, leaving his shorter rivals pogless. They called him, "The Trashman." They chanted, "Take out the trash, Steve-o." On several occasions he regretted inventing the nickname for himself. Prescott left the pog world before it became unfashionable.Hobbies
WoodworkingPrescott also enjoys woodworking in his spare time and even has a small business in this field. Stephen Prescott has been carving since 1982. He originally wanted to carve birds but couldn’t find any information and instead discovered Harold Enlow’s Carving Ozark Characters book. It was love at first sight. The birds were out and caricatures were in full force. The caricatures just seemed to fit Steve’s personality, especially the western figures. With a hometown known as Cowtown the cowboys were a natural choice to carve. Early caricature carving influences included Harold Enlow’s books and fellow Cowtown carvers, Claude Bolton and Jack Price. Steve has written two caricature carving books, Cowtown Carving and Carving BLOCKHEADS. Another book on sports caricatures should be completed in 2003.
Steve is a professional educator with more than twenty-five years experience in teaching biology and coaching football. It is natural that teaching woodcarving would follow. Steve began teaching caricature carving in 1987. He has taught classes in more than twenty-five states and Canada. Steve has received numerous awards in caricature carving. He has twice won the Texas Whittling Championship and has been featured carver at the International Woodcarvers Congress Show. His carvings and writings have been featured in NWCA Chip Chats, The Mallet, Wood Magazine, Art of the West, Western Horseman, Woodcarving Illustrated and other publications. Steve is a co-founder of the Caricature Carvers of America and served as its first president. The CCA has evolved into a strong influence in the carving community and it that influence Steve is most proud. He is still teaching at the secondary level and is eagerly looking forward to retirement. His plans after retirement are to devote fulltime to carving, teaching woodcarving and writing more caricature carving books.
