Gossypium (clothes)

Gossypium is a brand of clothing. Most of its products are made from the cotton plant that the name comes from.

The Gossypium clothing brand was launched by one English and one French textile technologist in 2000 once they returned from India where they spent 2 years as consultants to Agrocel helping them to launch the Agrocel Pure & Fair cotton brand - the worlds first fair trade direct supplier of cotton designed to put the farmers needs first. It is a brand as the name suggests, totally dedicated to all that is good in the world of cotton - from grower to user with everyone in between.

As textile specialists they were saddened by the low quality of cotton products on the market. Since they understood deeply the challenges of cotton farmers they decided that only a high quality cotton brand could be the way for the cotton to be valued and the farmer to be paid enough to improve his farming practices as steward of the land.

Fuelled by their high level of knowledge of the textile processing industry ( Abi) and high quality, colour and marketing ( Thomas)these two intrepid inventors were not deterred by the fact that the UK had not heard of fair trade or eco cotton. They took to their market stall and thanks to Thomas's first set of funky designs and postcards were able to entice a few early pioneers to enjoy their own take on cotton.

Fast forward 2007 and the whole UK wants Fairtrade cotton - the cotton labelling was the most successful product launch ever, and Agrocel is changing the future for 1000's of cotton farmers who represent some of the worlds poorest people whilst looking after millions of hectares of our land.

Many actors are stepping onto the stage to sell "ethical fashion". Gossypium meanwhile is still proud to be a fully independent clothing brand. Its founders have created an internal trusteeship council of shareholders but refuse to let the venture capitalists in. Just as Gossypium values the work of its cotton farmers and the fact that every plant reduces co2 by 3 kg per cropping season, it values the details of every product it makes and every Gossypium product is designed to last for several years.
