WCLM signed on in 1959 as WENZ. Up until 1966 , it had a Top 40 format. In 1966 , the station switched to it's long running R&B/Soul format which lasted thru the rest of the 1960s and all of the 1970s . Some of the more popular personalities on WENZ included Kirby Carmicheal, Willie "Meatball " Poe , Jim Minor , and Hardy Jay Lang. By 1982,new FM competitition from recently switched R&B station WPLZ-FM (Magic 99 )forced a format change to all news in 1982. In 1986 , the station resumed it's R&B/Soul Format , using automation and taped music supplied by TM/Century in Dallas. In 1987 the station flipped to Oldies as WRGF . In 1989 the calls changed to WCLM and a Jazz format. As the years went by , the station expanded into R&B, Gospel, and religious programming. Also , the station added a block of classic country and bluegrass hosted by "Big" John Trimble, now in Morning Drive. Also , in 2007 , the station hired legendary Richmond R&B personality Chip "Chocolate Chip" Johnston for middays , and rehired Kirby Carmicheal for afternoons , both playing classic soul & R&B .
In March of 2007, WCLM began simulcasting on new sister station
WHAP at 1340 AM, in nearby Hopewell.External Links
