Pieter Hubert Ries (born
Bonn , April 1, 1802 - diedBerlin , September 14, 1886) was a German violinist and composer.Ries was the son of
Franz Anton Ries and the brother ofFerdinand Ries ; after studying with his father, Hubert studied inKassel withLouis Spohr andMoritz Hauptmann . In 1824, he became a member of theKöningstadt Theater Orchestra , and the next year entered into service at the court chapel. In 1835, he became director of theBerlin Philharmonic Society . From 1851 to 1872 he taught at the Royal Orchestra School. He had three sons, all of whom entered into music:Louis Ries (born January 30, 1830), a violinist;Adolf Ries (born December 20, 1837), a pianist; andFranz Ries (born April 7, 1846), a violinist and composer.Among Hubert's compositions are two
violin concerto s,string quartet s,etude s,duet s, and exercise pieces. He also wrote a textbook, "Violinschule" (1873).
