"Shamokal" or "Samakal" ( _bn. সমকাল "Shômokal", "current time, contemporary") is a Bengali language daily newspaper published in Dhaka, Bangladesh. "Shamokal" started publishing in April, 2005. As of 2007, the circulation of Shamokal is around 2 Lakh.

Abed Khan, a columnist, serves as editor. Golam Sarwar, the editor of "Jugantor", another news-daily of Bangladesh, was the first editor of "Shamokal". Muzzammil Husain Manju, a journalist and former deputy editor of "Prothom Alo", has been the deputy editor. Mustafiz Shafi is the news editor. Recently, journalist Alamgir Hossain joined as deputy editor.

Regular columnists

Famous columnists regularly write in this newspaper. Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury contributes every week in `Kaler Ayna (The Mirror of the Time)'. Hasan Azizul Huq, the famous story writer of the sub continent, is another columnist. Justice Habibur Rahman, the former chief advisor of the Bangladesh caretaker government is a regular columnist. Zillur Rahman Siddiqui, Shahriar Kabir, Badruddin Omar, Selim Reza Newton, economist Anu Muhammad, Abu Ahmed, and dramatist Mamunur Rashid also write columns.

upplements

`Kaler Kheya (Boat of the Time)', the most popular literary magazine of this time, is one of the weekly supplements of Samakal. Prominent young poet Masud Hassan edited this supplement. The other weekly supplements are 'Nandan', `Shaili', 'Campus', 'Kurir Pore (after 20)', 'Taka Aana Pai (Economy)', 'Naristhan (Women Platform)', 'Champion' and 'Ghassfaring (page for children)'. 'Suhreed Samabesh (Platform of Welwishers)' is the reader organization of this daily. Jointly with Oxfam GB, Samakal recently published a magazine on Climate Change of Bangladesh.

Threats

From its beginning at 2005, the paper's journalists have been working despite threats and dangers. In 2005, Goutam Das, who worked as Faridpur (Bureau Chief), was murdered. In 2006, ruling party cadres attacked Samakal Rajshahi Bureau office and Shiblee Noman, the Bureau Chief was assaulted.
