- Rockall Bank and Trough
The Rockall Trough (
Scottish Gaelic : "Clais Sgeir Rocail") is a deep-water bathymetric feature to the northwest ofScotland andIreland , running roughly from southwest to northeast, flanked on thenorth by the Rockall Plateau and to thesouth by thePorcupine Seabight . At the northern end, the channel is bounded by theWyville-Thomson Ridge , named afterCharles Wyville Thomson , professor ofzoology at theUniversity of Edinburgh and driving force behind theChallenger Expedition . At the southern end, the trough opens into the Porcupineabyssal plain . One of the features of the Rockall Trough is theAnton Dohrn Seamount , aseamount named in the memory ofAnton Dohrn rising 1500metre s from the surroundingseabed .The
petroleum andnatural gas resources in the area have been the source of political tensions between the governments of theUnited Kingdom ,Republic of Ireland and theFaroe Islands .The area supports cold water
coral colonies andcarbonate mound fields such as theLogachev Mounds ; the trough supports a rich deep seafish population.cite web
