William, along with his wife Mary, gained the crown of England after overthrowing his father-in-law, James II, in the Glorious Revolution. Mary was James II's daughter, who had been taken from her father by her grandfather at an early age and raised Protestant to ensure that she would continue the Stuart line.
After their death, Mary's younger sister Anne took the throne of England.
