comments =The Russian River Valley AVA is an
American Viticultural Area in Sonoma County,California . Centered around the Russian River, the Russian River Valley AVA accounts for about one-sixth of the total plantedvineyard acre age in Sonoma County. Theappellation was granted AVA status in 1983 and enlarged in 2005. [Russian River Valley Winegrowers Association] The area generally lies between Sebastopol and Santa Rosa in the south, and Forestville and Healdsburg in the north. [See map, [http://www.rrvw.org/ava-boundary/ Russian River Valley AVA map] ] The Russian River Valley has a characteristically cool climate, heavily affected by fog generated by the valley's proximity to thePacific Ocean . The area is known for its success with cool climatevarietal s, notablyPinot Noir andChardonnay .A proposal to enlarge the AVA to include areas to the South in the Two Rock area has been received and published in the Federal Register. The open comment period extends through October 20, 2008.
