"Dream Knocker"'s story revolves around Choco, a first year female high school student in the drama club. Her club is planning to put on the musical play "Toy Box" for the upcoming school culture festival, with Choco taking the lead role, and the entire club is in the process of rehearsing the play. One day during rehearsal, Choco gets a mysterious phone call on her cell phone from an unknown woman. It turns out this phone call is a prank call taking advantage of a mysterious string of events that occurred five years previous that were related to the same "Toy Box" play. Before the culture festival begins, Choco and her friends want to solve the mystery of the events of five years before.

;Nihongo|Choco|チョコ|Choko:Choco is a first year high school student in the drama club, and is the main protagonist. She was given the nickname "Choco" by the drama club's president, and her real name is never revealed. Choco refers to herself with the masculine pronoun Nihongo|"boku"|僕, meaning "I", an unusual thing for a girl to do. Her older brother Naoto is in the same club. Choco takes the lead role in the musical play "Toy Box" for the upcoming school culture festival, and soon finds herself in the middle of a five-year-old mystery.
;Nihongo|Hotori Yumeno|夢野 ほとり|Yumeno Hotori:Hotori is Choco's close friend, and is a fellow first year student. The president of the drama club gave her the nickname "Fushigi-chan", meaning roughly "mystery girl". In stark contrast to the outgoing Choco, Hotori is an introvert, and is in charge of the costumes and props the club uses. Hotori considers Choco more than just a friend.
;Nihongo|Ren Arisugawa|有栖川 恋|Arisugawa Ren:Ren is a second year student who joined the drama club about half-way through the school year, right before the culture festival. The drama club president gave her the nickname "Alice". She is a mysterious girl whose emotions are often expressed out in the open. She wants to some day be in charge of the screenplays for the club.
;Nihongo|Megumi Inukai|犬飼 恵|Inukai Megumi:Megumi is a second year student, and is Choco's dormitory roommate. She loves to read mystery novels and even started the Mystery Research Society club, but she is the only member.
;Nihongo|Hifumi Tsukumo|九十九 一二三|Tsukumo Hifumi:Hifumi is the drama club's president and is a third year student. She has an "elder sister" type of disposition, and is known for having a strong personality.
