- Radio Kaleidoscope
Radio Kaleidoscope was a
pirate radio station, based inBenfleet ,Essex that commenced broadcasting on themedium wave in the aftermath of theMarine Broadcasting Offences Act in 1967 that effectively outlawed offshore stations. Radio Caroline which continued to broadcast offshore despite the new law.The station added a
short wave transmitter in 1969.The station also forged links with the
UK Underground , was advertised extensively in theUnderground Press . It's name became so well-known that the staff, upon arrival at theIsle of Wight Festival in 1970, were immediately granted backstage access.The authorities caught up with Radio Kaleidoscope later in 1970. A raid on their base seriously curtailed operations and the station's activities petered out in 1972.
In 1973 Colin King recruited a renegade faction from
