Rosie's Bar

Rosie's Bar

Rosie's Bar was a tavern near the semi-fictional 4077th MASH unit on the TV series "M*A*S*H". It was run by a Korean woman who had apparently assumed the name Rosie. Her real name is never revealed. The bar is much the same as the other small Korean buildings depicted in the series. There are at least two rooms at Rosie's, the bar itself and a storage room, which also serves as a location for floating crap games and other illicit activities.

Rosie made her first appearance in the third-season episode "Mad Dogs and Servicemen", and was played by Shuzuko Hoshi. She was also portrayed by Frances Fong in two episodes. For most of her appearances, however, Rosie was played by Eileen Saki. Curiously, Saki and Fong both appeared in the "Bug Out" episode, with Saki as the Madame of a brothel.

Hoshi's Rosie, whom Radar called "Mrs. Rosie," was portrayed as a kind woman who was very up-to-date on American current events and entertainment news. Saki's Rosie spoke fluent English, was a savvy businesswoman, was well acquainted with figures from low-level organized crime rings, and was extremely distrustful of her waitresses.

In the episode "A Night at Rosie's" (Season 7, Episode 23), most of the 4077th medical staff, exhausted from work, essentially took up residence at Rosie's Bar and refused to return to camp. They declared the bar an independent country, calling it "Rosieland." In the episode "Captains Outrageous" (Season 8, Episode 13), members of the 4077th staff ran the bar while Rosie was recovering from an injury. It is revealed in that same episode that Rosie's stays open at the pleasure of a certain Australian officer named Muldoon, whose drinks are served gratis, and in a coffee cup.
