- USS Carnelian (PY-19)
USS "Carnelian" (PY-19) was a converted
yacht that patrolled with theUnited States Navy inWorld War II . She was named forcarnelian (a semi-precious stone)."Carnelian" was built as the yacht "Trudione" in
1930 byBath Iron Works ,Bath, Maine . She was renamed "Seventeen" in December 1930. She was then purchased by the Navy on13 May 1941 and commissioned7 June 1941 with Lieutenant CommanderG. L. Hoffman , USNR, in command.She was then assigned to patrol the Caribbean, and then onto other duties during the war.
"Carnelian" arrived at
Jacksonville, Florida , February 23, 1942 for patrol duty in theCaribbean . Later based onNew Orleans, Louisiana for duty escortingconvoy s toGalveston, Texas andKey West , Carnelian provided essential services to theGulf Sea Frontier in its task of guarding a wide area with minimal forces. From November 1942 through January1944 , the converted yacht screened convoys, composed primarily of tankers with cargoes of oil, betweenTrinidad andRecife, Brazil .After overhaul, "Carnelian" joined the antisubmarine training group based at
Norfolk, Virginia , with whom she served until January 25, 1945. Assigned then to thePotomac River Naval Command , she was based at theMine Warfare Test Station , Solomons,Maryland , for mine test operations inChesapeake Bay ."Carnelian" was decommissioned January 4,
1946 and transferred to theMaritime Commission October 24, 1946.ee also
