Gockston

Gockston

Gockston is a small housing estate in the north of Paisley acros the M8 from Glasgow Airport. It is part of the St James estate along with Shortroods. The ground was weak and peat-filled until it was prepared for the Airport in the 1960s and the construction of houses was able to take place.

Gockston consisted of terraced houses and 3 storey tenemants. Merksworth High School was also built in the area.

Regeneration of the scheme began in 2002 when the tenemants were demolished along with the high school. Only a few streets of terraced homes remained in Gockston until detached and semi-detached houses were built courtesy of the company Bellway. The new houses have been very popular and may lead to the area regaining its old population.

However the fact remains that Gockston is isolated from the town centre by poor transport links which will hopefully be improved soon.
