Walter Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch

Walter Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch

Walter Francis Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch, 7th Duke of Queensberry KG, PC (25 November 1806 - 16 April 1884) was a British politician and nobleman. Educated at Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge, Buccleuch married Lady Charlotte Thynne, daughter of the Marquess of Bath, by whom he had three daughters and four sons.

A great Scottish landed magnate, Buccleuch was in politics a Conservative, and was created a Knight of the Garter in 1835, and served as Lord Privy Seal and Lord President in Peel's government in the 1840s, when he reluctantly supported Peel's decision respecting repeal of the Corn Laws.

In 1822 George IV spent some days as his guest at Dalkeith Palace, the first visit of a reigning Hanoverian monarch to Scotland. Twenty years later, Queen Victoria honoured him with a visit.

The Duke married Lady Charlotte Anne Thynne, in London on August 13, 1829 and George IV was the sponsor for, and attended the christening of their son, William Henry Walter, later the 6th Duke.

The family continued to hold a high profile in royal circles, being invited to the Coronations of William IV and Victoria, with the Duke acting as Gold Stick.

After Peel's fall, his political career largely came to an end. In 1877 he became Chancellor of the University of Glasgow. He died in 1884.
