F3 class

F3 class

F3 is a project name for a class of cruise ship under construction at Aker Yards Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The two ships in this class under construction (as of September 2008) were ordered by the Norwegian Cruise Line in November 2006, with an option for a third vessel that was not exercised. The first ship is scheduled to be delivered in January of 2010. The second ship is due for delivery in 2011. According to a news report published in September 2008 NCL will cancel the order for the first F3 type vessel due to a dispute with the shipyard.cite web |url=http://www.travelpulse.com/Resources/Editorial.aspx?n=45724 |title=NCL Reportedly Tells Employees First F3 Is Cancelled |accessdate=2008-09-25 |last= |first= |coauthors= |date=2008-09-22 |work=travelpulse |publisher=Performance Media Group ]

Overview

The F3 class will surpass the "Jewel" class as NCL's largest vessels by a margin of over 50,000 gt. The F3 represents the "third generation" of Freestyle cruising vessels and their size allows NCL to now have two ships that are in a "mega-class" of their competitors at Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruises. Although few details have been released about the F3, plans call for 4200 passenger berths per vessel, with 100% of outside cabins having balconies. In total, the ships will have 1415 balcony staterooms and suites. Additionally, NCL promises that these new ships will have 60% more passenger space than their current largest ships. The F3 class ships will be built by Aker Yards at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The last ships delivered to NCL that was not at least partially built at a German shipyard was the "Windward" of 1993. Since that date and until this order, NCL's newbuildings have been built at the German Meyer Werft, Lloyd Werft, Bremer Vulcan and Aker MTW shipyards.

Concept and construction

The F3 class ships are reported to feature several innovative design features.

In September 2008 dispute over the price of the first F3 vessel (at the time approximately 25% complete) arose between Norwegian Cruise Line and Aker Yards. Reportedly the sale of 50% of NCL to Apollo Management in August 2007 resulted in Apollo making several changes to the F3 designs, resulting in higher cost for the first F3 vessel. The construction of the second F3 ship is unaffected by the dispute. Both claims are unconfirmed by the companies as of 2008-09-25.
