The 1989 Chicago Cubs season marked the last time the Cubs would win their division until the realignment to six divisions in 1994 which moved the Cubs to the NL Central. Winning the division put the Cubs in the playoffs, which they would not return to until winning the NL Wild Card in 1998. They would, however, lose the NLCS against the San Francisco Giants.
