The university has the longest histories as a university of art in Japan. And in Tokyo , Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music was established in 1885.
History
In 1880, the founder Sanjo Sanetomi gave the university the name "nihongo|"Nihon Saisho Kyoto Ga Gakkou"|日本最初京都画学校|Kyoto Art School , The first establishment in Japan "
Kyoto City had lost its status as a capital in 1867 at the beginning of Meiji Period.We had excellent painters or pottery artists in Kansai region,( Kyoto ,Osaka ,Shiga and so forth).
The nihongo|"Bunmei Kaika"|文明 開化|the occidentalization of Japanese culture in earlier meiji era had brought Japan the militarism and the abandoning of conventional art culture in Kyoto , former the capital of Japan.
Some learned citizens had their co-working to establish their training institution for Japanese traditional art. Thus the university has its origins.
