Karemeen

Karemeen is the Malayalam name for "Etroplus suratensis", a cichlid species which is also called pearl fish or green chromide. It feeds on algea, plant material and inscets. It is found throughout Kerala, especially in the Kerala backwaters around Alleppey.

It is considered a delicacy in the cuisine of Kerala. There are many recipes that are available on the net (see list below). Some of the prominent dishes are the Karemeen Fry, Karemeen Molly and Karemeen Pollichathu.
